“You’re not the same as you were before,” said the Mad Hatter. You were much more… muchier… you’ve lost your muchness.”
“My muchness?” Alice asked.
“In there,” he said, pointing to her heart. “Something is missing.”
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, muchness means “the quality or state of being in great quantity, extent, or degree.” The Mad Hatter’s assessment of Alice’s loss of muchness refers to something within Alice — her heart, her spirit – and her sense of destiny that she had somehow gone adrift since the first time she had visited Wonderland.
Lent is a 40-day space when we create the time and the space in our lives to pay attention to all the unnoticed and countless ways we may have lost our muchness. It’s an intentional time we remind ourselves of our calling and destiny which now may echo as a distant or forgotten voice.
I hope you will join me on this journey through Lent. I will post a weekly blog, beginning on Wednesday, February 14, as we give watchful diligence over our hearts.
