Keeping in Step with the Spirit

Gal. 5:25 – “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

This verse makes me think of a dance. In a dance some leads and it the job of the other to follow. It doesn’t work if both want to lead. One has to submit to the lead of the other. When they are learning to dance, it tends to be awkward….they first listen to the music and feel it’s rhythm. Then they begin to move slowly at first, and the focus is on the steps of the one who is leading. After a while, however, after a pair have been together long enough and practiced these movements repeatedly, they eyes are lifted from the floor to each other, and even the slightest move…a nudge of a shoulder, a glance of the eyes, the turn of the head, indicates a change in movement and one following willingly moves without missing a beat. When this happens…they form a wonderful cooperative partnership that works in union with flowing synchronization. That’s why we love to watch “Dancing the with Stars…” how they can take an awkward clutz and with the right leader….make something beautiful to behold.

Once we realize the Holy Spirit is active in us to “lead” us in living a life pleasing to God…

• We willing to give up control of our carefully constructed lives and we finally embark on the lifelong adventure of turning away from our own plans and …actually…leaning into God’s creative, disruptive, mysterious ways in our lives.
• We approach God with a sense of wonder, curiosity, and vulnerability.
• We release our expectations of what we think our lives should look like and receive the life he wants to give us.

Care to dance, anyone?
